To Build a Pool in the Backyard, or to Not, That is the Question: Pros and Cons of a Backyard Pool

Backyard pools are often a dream for homeowners, but are they worth it? Here are some pros and cons of putting a pool in your yard that will hopefully help you make an informed decision.

Pros

A custom backyard pool can be beneficial in several different ways.  For example, there are some people who do not live close to any natural bodies of water, so having a pool is the next best option for them to get their daily dose of water. Secondly, it can give kids something fun to do during hot summer days.  It can also give adults another reason to spend time together as a family, doing something they all enjoy during the summer months!

Your kids will be able to spend time outside and enjoy the hot sun instead of staying inside and getting burnt.  This can also help you get to know your neighbors if they have children, especially if they are in your age group.  The pool can also be the perfect place for family get-togethers, or just hanging out with friends on a hot summer day.  If you have an above ground pool, it may even encourage you to stay at home instead of going out most days of the week.

What are the benefits of having a pool in your backyard?  You will never have to wait for a ride in someone’s car or on the subway in order to go and visit a friend who lives in another neighborhood.  If you live within walking distance from your friends, you can just walk over there and spend time together at the pool.

Cons

Having a pool in your backyard can have several negative consequences as well. For example, it is going to cost a lot of money for you to build one and fill it up with water. After you have built one, it will also take a lot of money and time to keep it clean and well maintained. Also, it is going to make your backyard look like an eye sore! This can cause problems if you live in a neighborhood with people who do not want such a “hassle” as they call it.

Having a pool in your backyard is not for everybody.  It takes a lot of time and money to build, clean, and maintain it.  If you do decide that you want one, make sure it is something you are wanting to do for 2-3 years before you actually go out there and start building!

Pools can be very dangerous, people die from unintentional drowning every day.  If you plan on building one make sure there is always an adult around to supervise the kids at all times.

Consider these pros and cons before starting on creating your own backyard oasis!
