How to Keep Your RV Cool in the Summer

Summer camping ain’t no joke. The heat can be unbearable, even with the AC on full blast. We’ve compiled the ultimate list of tips to keep your RV cool, comfortable, and most importantly, livable during the dog days of summer.

Park in the Shade

This one seems like a no-brainer, but it’s worth mentioning. If you can find a spot to park your RV that’s shaded by trees or other buildings, do it. The less direct sunlight beating down on your RV, the cooler it will be inside.

Use Reflective Window Covers

There are special covers you can buy that reflect sunlight away from your windows. This helps to keep the heat out and the cool air in. You can also make your own window covers with some tinfoil and some tape. Just be careful not to start a fire!

Use Fans

Ceiling fans and portable fans can help circulate the air and make the temperature inside your RV more bearable. If you don’t have any fans, open the windows and doors to create a cross-breeze. Just be sure to close up again when the sun goes down to keep the bugs out.

Make Ice Blocks

Fill up some plastic containers with water and stick them in the freezer overnight. In the morning, put them in front of your fan or in front of an open window to create a makeshift air conditioner. As the ice melts, it will cool down the air around it.

Don’t Cook Inside

If at all possible, cook outside. Not only will it heat up your RV, but it will make it smell. No one wants to eat in a sauna. If you must cook inside, try to use the microwave or crockpot instead of the oven or stovetop.

Invest in a Good Mattress

A good mattress can make all the difference when you’re trying to sleep in the heat. There are special cooling custom made mattresses that are designed to wick away heat and keep you comfortable all night long.

Use Insulation

There are special reflective blankets you can buy that help to insulate your RV and keep the heat out. You can also line your windows with bubble wrap to help reflect sunlight away.

Park Next to a Lake or River

If you’re lucky enough to be camping near a body of water, take advantage of it! The cooler air coming off of the water will help to lower the temperature inside your RV. Just be sure to keep your windows and doors closed so the bugs don’t come in.

Use a Portable Air Conditioner

If you have a portable air conditioner, use it! Just be mindful of how much power it’s using and don’t run it 24/7. You don’t want to blow a fuse or overheat your RV’s electrical system.

Take Cool Showers

If all else fails, take a cool shower. It might not make the whole RV cooler, but it will definitely make you feel better. Just be sure to turn the AC back on afterwards so you don’t sweat through your sheets!
